(If applicable) Acquire at least Doom2.wad, and DOOM.wad if you want to play the first game as well (recommended).
This can be purchased on steam (it's okay, because you'll be using a sourceport, and won't be running the game through steam)
ALTERNATIVELY: You can download Freedoom which is a version of Doom2.wad without all the copyrighted sounds and textures.
(You'll want Complete IWAD)
STEP 2: Download and install your sourceport
I recommend Zandronum, and am using it for my WAD. If you were directed here because you want to play my WAD, give this a shot, otherwise the sourceport you play is up to you, you can't go wrong with Zdoom or GZdoom, and Odamex and Zdaemon have their merits. DOWNLOAD ZANDRONUM
Step 3: Configuration
Go to OPTIONS > SET VIDEO MODE > and set RENDERER to OPENGL.
Also set the resolution to whatever works for you.
If you have a decent computer you can also scale the graphics up, which looks particularly good with MSPD. Do this here:
Optioins > Display > OpenGL > Texture Options > High Resolution Scaling (or something like this)
Step 4: Run
The simplest way to start the game is probably by running Doomseeker (install this along with Zandronum, they're packaged!), then clicking "File" at the top left, and click "create server" (or just press Ctrl+S)
When the Create Server window pops up, just make sure your IWAD is set to doom2.wad (Freedoom or the original are both just called doom2.wad), and then under "Additional WADs and Files" you can just click and drag whatever extra stuff you want to run. For my wad, add my levels, then MSPD because that's currently required (i'll make a standalone one later, but I'm loving mspd right now).
To play single player, just make the game mode "Cooperative" and click "Play Offline."
To get an unmodified experience though, go ahead and start a new game once it launches so there are no dmflags set.
